Income Tax Clinic – Tax Preparer

  • Date of Event: February 2020-April 30, 2020.
  • Time Commitment: Minimum 2 hours commitment between 9am-12pm and/or 1pm-4pm on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays in March and April. There will be one or two days half days required for orientation and training in February.

The position enables ASK! Community Information Centre and LAMP to support low income individuals and families in Etobicoke with annual Income Tax preparation and filing. Volunteers work directly with clients to complete and submit an income tax return during the Community Volunteer Income Tax Clinic. The goal of the clinic is to ensure equitable access to key programs and services through Canada’s provincial and federal tax programs.

Position Responsibilities
  • The volunteer meets with clients to assist them in completing their Income tax return. Only basic returns are completed.
  • The volunteer ensures clients are aware of privacy and security policies employed during the Income Tax Clinic.
  • The volunteer ensures that the client’s information is kept secure and confidential.
Skills, Knowledge and Specifications Required:
  • Previous experience in filing electronic (Efile software is used)
  • Able to commit to regular hours/days during a two month period of March and April
  • Reliable and Punctual
  • Sensitivity and ability to work with a diverse client group
  • Good command of English language both written and spoken
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to work as part of a team
  • Demonstrate problem solving/decision making skills
  • Must complete a criminal reference check but LAMP will pay

Income Tax Clinic – Tax Filing Advisor and Support Volunteer

This is an important support position that includes supporting staff in training new volunteers to file simple tax returns and providing mentoring and support during the tax clinic to other volunteers such as answering questions from volunteers about Federal and Provincial tax programs, and problem solving unique filing situations as they arise

Position Responsibilities
  • Working with staff to deliver training to tax preparer volunteers
  • Mentoring new volunteers during their first volunteer day by allow them to shadow you as you prepare tax returns
  • Providing support and troubleshooting during tax clinic
  • Answering questions from volunteers regarding Federal and Provincial tax programs and Ufile software
  • Assisting volunteers in problem solving unique filing situations as they arise
  • Observing client confidentiality and all applicable policies and procedures
Skills, Knowledge and Specifications Required:
  • Experience with Ufile or similar tax filing software
  • Able to commit to regular hours/days during a 2-3 month period
  • Well versed in Federal (Canada) and Provincial (Ontario) tax programs, benefits and forms
  • Passionate about teaching and empowering others
  • Sensitive about the unique needs and challenges of marginalized groups
  • Interested in making a difference through volunteering
  • Registration with the Canada Revenue Agency CVITP program (can be done after accepting position)
  • Must have a valid SIN card and be permanent resident of Canada, Canadian Citizen or Convention Refugee.
  • willing to submit to a police record check
