About the General Health Promotion Program
“Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health” – World Health Organization
Health Promotion is based on preventing illness and finding ways to keep people healthy, to strengthening their individual capacities and, the communities they live in. At LAMP we work together with the community and our partners to create sustainable, inclusive and healthy environments.

What We Do
Every aspect of our work at LAMP from clinical to community services involves health promotion.
Our health promotion team addresses the social determinants of health; those structural areas in life that influence our health and well-being. Many factors affect our health such as stresses associated with income and employment, food security, housing and social supports. Health Promotion at LAMP focuses on empowerment, public participation and reducing social inequalities as core components to improve health and opportunities for the future.
Who do we serve?
We serve a diverse population in the Lakeshore-Etobicoke community. Our priority populations include isolated seniors, people living in poverty, racialized and marginalized individuals and communities.

Community Development
At LAMP Community Health Centre we believe in a broad definition of health that includes the social and economic well-being of our community.
The liveability of neighbourhoods, we feel, impacts the health of the larger community; the more liveable the area the better health of our local residents. We believe that community members should be involved in decisions that affect their daily lives. Community development is incorporated into all our health promotion work. To this end, LAMP works
towards the well-being of our community by supporting:
- Public participation in local planning and economic development activities
- Involvement in local environmental initiatives
- Increased communication and partnerships between interest groups and local community associations and,
- Improvement of skills and know-how necessary to effect social change within the community

Ways To Get Involved
The Garden Pods Project
The Gardens Pod Project is based on gardening model of mobile raised gardens (PODS) built on under-utilized land in partnership with local community /business.
These garden pods are set up and cared for by the Pod Planter Providers (residential or institutional/business pods volunteers) where a portion of harvest is given back to the community supporting the local food bank and other food programs. The Garden Pod Project addresses food security, reduces emissions, increases greenery and promotes knowledge about food and gardening.
Food Security: The Good Food Market
Good Food Markets, a mobile and much smaller version of a farmer’s market, bring fresh and affordable produce to communities.
In partnership with Foodshare, LAMP offers a Good Food Market year round in the New Toronto neighbourhood. These markets offer vegetables and fruit high in quality, culturally appropriate at affordable prices.
Located in the Lakeshore Village Park, LAMP’s Good Food Market program runs on Wednesdays from 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm from June to September. You can’t miss us. We are located in the centre of the park. During the colder months, we move indoor to the seniors building, Lerette Manor at 250 12th Street from 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm. Everyone Welcome!
During the summer months, when resources are available, alongside the GFM, we set up a pizza oven program. The mobile pizza oven is built each week with the help of our committed volunteers. LAMP provides the fresh topping and pizza dough and residents create their own delicious oven baked pizza.

Housing
LAMP’s 2017 AGM panel on Affordable Housing provided a platform for community engagement to address the affordable housing crisis.
More than 160 people attended, passionate about improving conditions for people finding it hard to afford to live in Toronto.
Residents shared their stories of hardship of being on the verge of homelessness, living in a shelter, living in substandard conditions and travelling hours to get to school or work. A call to action was made along with a promise of more community meetings to find solutions.

Community Partnerships
In partnership with important grassroots organizations like Albion Neighbourhood Services, Daily Bread Foodbank and Toronto Public Health and more than 40 local residents at each stakeholder meeting, a community led initiative was born. More than 172 individuals have participated to date.
Lakeshore Affordable Housing Advocacy
The community leaders formed the Lakeshore Affordable Housing Advocacy and Action Group. Its purpose is to create new units of affordable supportive housing, to research innovative models and to help people on the verge of homelessness maintain their housing.
Outcomes include Landlord and Tenants Rights education and support, referrals to Albion Neighbourhood Services, South Etobicoke Community Legal Services, seniors support services, and assistance with housing matters like maintenance and other issues.

LAMP CHC’s Wellness Programs help to provide individuals with the information, tools and skills they need to better manage and control their health.
Health promoters and community health educators facilitate presentations on health promotion topics that improve well-being. These topics include mental health, mindfulness, gentle exercise, anti-bullying, healthy eating and more. Exercise classes help individuals to build strength and skills to improve their fitness level and balance. The goal is to help people to achieve their best health by providing information and resources to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Senior Programming
Seniors are the fastest growing demographic group in Canada and represent invaluable community resources.
By encouraging seniors to participate in our various programs, we give them the opportunity to meet new people, exercise, and relieve their stress! We also provide our clients with programs catered to learning new skills, such as navigating computers. Activities offered include International Folk Dance, Tai-Chi, Exercise Classes, and other recreational programs.
